Missed the first half of a match or last night's episode? Catch-up TV lets you go back in the programme guide and play something that has already been shown, without having recorded it. On IPTV it's one of the most useful features — but it isn't available on every channel or every app. This guide explains how it works and how to use it.
What Is IPTV Catch-Up TV?
IPTV catch-up TV lets you watch programmes that have already been broadcast by selecting them in the programme guide. Your provider stores recent broadcasts from supported channels for a set number of days, and your player streams them on demand. You don't need to record anything, but catch-up only covers channels and days your provider archives.
How Catch-Up Works Behind the Scenes
For each channel with catch-up enabled, the provider's servers keep a rolling archive of what was broadcast, typically covering several days. The programme guide tells your player when each programme started and ended. When you select a past programme, the player requests that time window from the archive and plays it like on-demand content, with pause and rewind.
Which Channels Have Catch-Up
Catch-up is set per channel by the provider, so availability varies. Players usually mark catch-up channels with a clock or rewind icon in the channel list or guide. With Xtreme HD IPTV UK, 12-month plans include 7-day catch-up on supported UK, US and European channels — see what the subscription includes. How far back you can go depends on the archive length, commonly between a few days and a week.
Players That Support Catch-Up
Catch-up needs support in the player as well as from the provider. Many full-featured players support it with Xtream Codes logins, although in some apps it's part of a paid upgrade, so check your player's feature list. Catch-up with a plain M3U playlist only works if the playlist includes catch-up information and the player understands it, so Xtream Codes is the more reliable choice. See our TiviMate setup guide or Xtream Codes explained.
How to Watch a Programme on Catch-Up
- Open the programme guide in your player
- Find a channel marked with the catch-up icon
- Scroll back in time to the programme you missed
- Select it and choose Play or Watch from start
- Use pause, rewind and fast-forward as with on-demand content
Some players also offer 'restart' on a programme that's currently live, which uses the same archive to jump back to the beginning.
Catch-Up vs Recording vs On-Demand
- Catch-up: past broadcasts from supported channels, kept for a limited number of days, no setup needed
- Recording: you choose what to save, it's stored on your own device, and it stays until you delete it — see recording IPTV
- On-demand (VOD): a library of films and series that isn't tied to a broadcast time
Why Catch-Up Might Not Work
- The channel doesn't have catch-up enabled — look for the icon
- The programme is older than the archive period
- Your plan doesn't include catch-up
- Your player doesn't support catch-up, or you're using an M3U playlist without catch-up information
- The guide times are wrong, so the player requests the wrong time window — see IPTV EPG not working
