IPTV on a MAG Box: Portal Setup Guide

4 min read

MAG boxes are dedicated IPTV set-top boxes made by Infomir. They work differently from a Firestick or smart TV app: instead of typing a username and password, the box connects to your provider's portal and is recognised by its MAC address. Once set up, a MAG box feels much like a traditional TV box, with a remote, a channel list and a guide. This guide explains how it works and how to get connected.

What Is a MAG Box?

A MAG box is an IPTV set-top box that connects to your TV by HDMI and to your router by Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Rather than installing player apps, it loads a portal — a web address supplied by your IPTV provider — that delivers the channel list, programme guide and on-demand library. The provider links your subscription to the box's unique MAC address.

How MAG Boxes Connect: Portals and MAC Addresses

Every network device has a MAC address, a unique hardware identifier. On a MAG box, the IPTV provider registers this address against your subscription. When the box loads the portal, the provider's server recognises the MAC address and unlocks your channels. That means two things: your provider needs your MAC address before the box will work, and if you change boxes, you need to give them the new one.

Finding Your MAG Box's MAC Address

The MAC address is usually printed on a label on the box and shown in the box's settings or information screens. Send the full address to your provider exactly as shown — a single wrong character means the portal won't recognise the box.

Entering the Portal URL

  • Open the box's settings menu from the remote
  • Find the portal settings — on many MAG models they sit in a Servers or Portals section, but menu names vary by model and firmware
  • Enter a name for Portal 1, such as your provider's name
  • Enter the Portal 1 URL exactly as your provider supplied it, including http:// and any port or path
  • Save, go back to the main settings, and restart the box

Menu names and layouts vary between models and firmware versions, so check the manufacturer's documentation for your model if the steps don't match.

Loading the Channel List

After the restart, the box loads the portal. The first load can take a minute or two while it downloads the channel list and guide. You should then see the provider's menu with TV, films and series. If it sits on 'Loading portal' for more than a few minutes, restart once more, then check your network connection and the URL.

MAG Models and 4K Support

Older HD-only models still work for HD channels but can't decode the HEVC video most 4K streams use. For 4K, check that your model's specification lists 4K and HEVC (H.265) support. Whatever the model, a wired Ethernet connection gives the most stable picture. Our guide to 4K IPTV explains the other requirements.

Common MAG Box Errors

  • 'Authorisation failed' or 'STB blocked': the MAC address isn't registered, was typed wrongly, or the subscription has expired — confirm the MAC with your provider
  • Stuck on 'Loading portal': check the portal URL for typos and confirm the box has a network connection under Settings > Network
  • Channels listed but won't play: restart the box; if only some channels fail, report them to support
  • No programme guide: give the portal a few minutes after first loading, then restart
  • Picture stutters: use Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi — see IPTV buffering

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually not. MAG boxes use a portal URL plus the box's MAC address, which your provider registers against your subscription.
